Diamond gets knocked off woman’s engagement ring at Golf Tournament
Sergio Garcia ’s errant tee shot knocks diamond off of woman’s engagement ring.
AKRON, Ohio – Sergio Garcia ’s errant tee shot on the third hole Sunday at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational nearly cost him more than just a couple of strokes. Garcia’s shot went wide of the fairway and struck a woman on the hand, knocking the diamond out of her ring. He signed a ball for the fan and apologized before hitting his approach to the green. “Obviously, it didn’t feel very good,” Garcia said. “You never like to hit anybody, but if you hit someone and make her lose her diamond ring, it feels even worse.” Garcia went on to bogey the hole and finished second to Rory McIlroy after carding a 1-over 71 in the final round at Firestone.
The fan was able to find the diamond after a lengthy search, the newly-engaged Garcia was prepared to make amends in the event that the stone could not be located.
“It probably would have gone to that, yes. If they would not find the diamond…I was prepared to buy her one,” he said. “I don’t know how (fiancée) Kathy would have felt about that, but other than that, it was okay.”
